A 911 hang-up resulted in a “significant” marijuana seizure and grow operation discovery by the Athabasca RCMP May 9.

According to an RCMP press release, when Mounties attended the scene of the call last Tuesday morning, a 32-year-old female informed them that her young child had accidentally dialed 911, and then said a physical altercation had taken place with her common-law husband.

While searching the residence to ensure the safety of the residence occupants, RCMP members found nearly 30 pounds of marijuana in bud form drying in a basement room, with a current street value of $74,000. The garage was also in the process of being outfitted for a grow operation.

Athabasca RCMP Cpl. Dale Bereza said the female owner of the property was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after RCMP officers received a warrant to search the property, and she was released later the same day on a promise to appear in Athabasca court June 26.

“She knew the code to the door, to get in, because this was a coded lock,” he said.

Bereza said RCMP officers were unable to locate the 35-year-old common-law husband, but a warrant is out for his arrest.

“We did find a significant amount of guns in a gun safe. The male is on a prohibition, and we did find a prohibited weapon,” he said.

The woman’s common-law spouse will be charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, breach of conditions, possession of a prohibited weapon and domestic assault.

Persons with information about the incident are encouraged to call the Athabasca RCMP at 780-675-5122 or the nearest police station, or anonymously by contacting CrimeStoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) and by Internet at www.tipsubmit.com.
