Athabasca RCMP responded to a call at approximately 1:40 p.m. of a sedan traveling westbound that lost control on Hwy 55, 17 km east of Athabasca, which rolled two times and slid to a stop in the ditch.

RCMP Cst. Morgan Kay arrived on scene to find a burgundy Dodge Intrepid lying on its roof in the ditch on the south side of the highway. He said the sole male occupant escaped uninjured, and was able to call a friend to come and pick him up.

Kay said the accident was likely caused by the driver hitting the centre slippery, "greasy" strip of road along the centre line, causing him to pass accross into the far shoulder, and flipping "once, possibly twice."

Once the vehicle traveling at highway speed made contact with the deep snow in the hard shoulder, "there was no getting out of it" at that point, said the constable.

"Watch it on the highways. They're not good. They look like they're good, but they're not in as good condition as they seem," said Kay, who is trying to tell drivers to "keep it easy on the roads."
