Children aged six and seven got their fingers messy at the Budding Artists Camp at Athabasca ’s Reform Church July 9-11.
From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day, Crystal Korth instructed the class of six budding artists with the help of two assistants, including her daughter.
She said they were trying to let imaginations soar with “messy, hands-on projects, ” some of which were inspired by the techniques of early abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky. Projects included 3D pieces in abstract circular patterns, as well as pieces that used concepts from cubism.
Parents and friends checked out some of the finished work in a Sunday school room last Thursday afternoon.
“The kids were so excited. They just couldn ’t wait for the next day, ” said Serena Koons, mother of Kaylee Koons, 10, who assisted with the camp. Serena said some days the children were brought outside into a courtyard near the church to explore a different environment as they worked on their art.
“It ’s amazing to just watch them, ” said Serena.
“I was just amazed with how careful they can be, ” said Kaylee.
“Every day, I ’d quiz them in the morning (on Kandinsky), and they ’d say ‘Kan- … it starts with a K! ’ ” said Korth of her students ’ openness to learning advanced concepts.
