ATHABASCA – An area man was airlifted to an Edmonton hospital in “serious condition” after being ejected from his vehicle following a Sunday-morning, single-vehicle rollover roughly 10 kilometres north of the Town of Athabasca.

A Feb. 8 news release states that shortly after 9:50 a.m., Feb. 5, Athabasca RCMP responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 813, north of Township Road 672.

Local RCMP officers, alongside Athabasca fire and medical services, arrived on scene and located a 65-year-old Athabasca County man who had been ejected from his vehicle — police will not be releasing his name.

Ultimately, the driver was taken from the scene by EMS and later airlifted to a hospital in Edmonton in “serious condition” while Highway 813, between Township Road 672 and 680, were impassable for approximately 45 minutes as crews cleared the area.

Athabasca RCMP continue their investigation of the crash and believe icy road conditions played a factor. They also remind motorists to drive for the conditions present and to be attentive to potential black ice as the temperatures rise and drop over the coming days.
