Athabasca bulk water rates increase

The Town of Athabasca has raised their bulk water rates over 47 per cent, from $4.40 to $6.49 a cube. “It went up the same as our residential and commercial rates,” said CAO Doug Topinka.

The Town of Athabasca has raised their bulk water rates over 47 per cent, from $4.40 to $6.49 a cube.

“It went up the same as our residential and commercial rates,” said CAO Doug Topinka.

The town’s water rates were raised in November 2010, but the price of bulk water was unaffected at the time, said Topinka.

“The residential and commercial rates were passed about a month ago, and they were lowered at that point from what we had put into effect in November last year,” he said.

“We raised (the bulk water rate) because the cost for our water supply from the (Aspen Regional Water Services) Commission is that much higher than it used to cost for us to produce it ourselves,” Topinka explained.

Mayor Roger Morrill said the percentage increase is the same as what they had increased the residential and commercial rates by in November 2010.

“That increase is the equivalent increase of what our residential and commercial rates are in town,” said Morrill.

Boyle’s bulk water rates are even more than the Town of Athabasca’s, at $7.75 a cube, according to Boyle CAO Charlie Ahsbey.

Athabasca County has not changed their rates, and bulk water can be purchased from Colinton for $4.40 a cube, the same rate that the Town of Athabasca was charging before the change.
