ATHABASCA – Athabasca County is looking to help out potential farmers to be through a $1,500 annual bursary for students pursuing an agricultural career at a post-secondary institution.
During the July 31 regular council meeting, all nine councillors voted unanimously to approve the new policy, which will put the bursary in the hands of the Agricultural Services Board (ASB).
“The board worked hard to be able to present this. It’s great for our county and our residents,” said Coun. Kelly Chamzuk.
To be eligible for the bursary, applicants or their parent/guardian must reside or own a property within Athabasca County. The bursary is open to both fresh high school graduates and mature students, with priority going towards students enrolled in their first year of university regardless of age.
“This is an excellent way to support our youth and residents in agriculture to not only stay in the community, but also to encourage youth and residents to enhance their education,” said Chamzuk.
“(It’s) encouraging the next generations to grow in Athabasca County.”
Applicants will have until Sept. 15 each year to submit their applications, which include the completed application form, proof of enrolment in a post-secondary institution, and a 500-750 word essay outlining why the applicant feels they are a deserving candidate, as well as their current and future role in agriculture.
All applications will be reviewed by the ASB and scored on a 40 point basis: 20 points for the written submission, 10 points for community involvement, and 10 points for the presentation and reference quality.
