Athabasca celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day

1 / 1 Martina Aginas and her daughter Kiyanni Aginas may have been in full regalia, but that didn’t stop them from inviting anyone who wanted to up to dance with them. “If your kids are running up to us, let them,” said the eldest Aginas. “These dances are meant to be shared.”

ATHABASCA - Kicking Horse Singers and Drummers took the stage in Athabasca June 21 for National Indigenous Peoples Day. The group, from Alexander First Nation, was joined by Martina and Kiyanni Aginas from Alexis First Nation to dance and celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. Around the community schools took part in the celebrations as well, including students at Calling Lake School who took part in an all-day celebration that included drumming, dancing, and outdoor-based learning to recognize the day.
