Athabasca County lifts fire control order

Wet conditions lower fire risk enough to allow backyard fires once again
The Airdrie Fire Department wants to raise fire safety awareness for fire pits and cigarette disposal as summer fast approaches.
Athabasca County residents are once again able to have open fires inside a bylaw compliant fire pit after the county lifted a fire restriction.

ATHABASCA – Athabasca County residents can break out the marshmallows and hot dogs following a couple of rainy weeks.

Effective 10 a.m. May 23, Athabasca County’s Fire Control Order has been lifted for areas outside of the Fire Protection Area (FPA).

County spokesperson Jordan Schenkelberg reminded residents and visitors to practice safe burning practices, adding that fireworks and exploding targets are still prohibited on public lands year-round.

All open burning, expect for fires contained within bylaw complaint fire pits, require a permit issued by Athabasca County. The Lac La Biche FPA has also lifted its fire advisory.
