Athabasca Healthcare Centre received $1.5 million in upgrades and repairs from the Government of Alberta’s Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP).

More than $1 million was spent on a chiller replacement to cool the hospital and another $500,000 was used to replace two boilers.

“These are our upgrades that are necessary to keep the facility viable and to enable us to provide care to the patients in a safe, comfortable environment,” said Mary Proskie, site manager for the Athabasca and Boyle Healthcare Centres.

The upgrades were completed this year and are currently undergoing evaluation to ensure the replacements are operating properly. The projects are a part of an annual list of renovations, repairs and upgrades submitted by Alberta Health Services (AHS) to Alberta Infrastructure for the IMP program where they are ranked in priority based on patient safety.

AHS has about 270 maintenance projects underway currently.

“No matter where you live in the province, it’s important that your health care needs can be met as close to home as possible,” said health minister Sarah Hoffman in a statement. “These projects help make that a reality, and are part of our commitment to manage and improve health infrastructure and capital across Alberta.”

In recent years, the funding has gone towards the centre’s roof replacement and repair, as well as a new trauma room.
