The special meeting between town council and Aspen View officials has been called for today, Tuesday, at 7 p.m. in town council’s chambers.

At their Oct. 18 council meeting, the Town of Athabasca ’s council voted to ask Aspen View Public Schools officials to meet with them again to discuss the road extension to the new school.

After a couple of split votes and failed motions - one to accept Taggish Engineering ’s quote for $750,000 for a new road and the other to meet with Aspen View before making any decisions - ; interim chief administrative officer Doug Topinka cautioned council that a decision should be made. ;

“Time is of the essence, ” he said.

Coun. Tanu Evans noted that Aspen View had asked council to make “rash decisions ” in the past, and he wanted to take a stand that they would not be rushed anymore.

“If Aspen View did not have money for site servicing, I would have suggested they did not come to town council ; asking us to waive off-site levies, ” he also said. ;

After the failed votes, Coun. Tim Verhaeghe agreed to change his vote, allowing the motion to meet with Aspen View to pass. Coun. Shelly Gurba, who initially voted to accept Taggish ’s quote, was the only councillor present to vote against the motion to meet with Aspen View. Mayor Roger Morrill excused himself from the discussion for a possible perceived pecuniary interest. ;

The special meeting has been called for today, Tuesday, at 7 p.m. in town council ’s chambers.
