Boyle CAO warns of rise in natural gas prices

The Village of Boyle is warning residents their March natural gas bill may be higher than expected.

The Village of Boyle is warning residents their March natural gas bill may be higher than expected.

“Gas prices have really been rocketing up,” said Charlie Ashbey, chief administrative officer for the Village of Boyle, at last Wednesday’s village council meeting. “Just a comparison: our price to our customers in October was $4.57 per gigajoule, and for March, it is $9.60.”

Ashbey said it has more than doubled.

“It goes up a lot of times in the summer, but no one is using it, so no one notices,” said village councillor Bob Clark.

Ashbey said that because March was rather cool, people will notice the rise in price.

Consumer demand spiked in the United States recently, causing a rise in Alberta prices.

The Village of Boyle is joining the world of social media by creating a Facebook page.

“I am a bit of a dinosaur. I don’t do Facebook, but I see the benefit of it,” Ashbey said. “When we had the power outage, Fortis had a Twitter feed, and it was very useful. We were monitoring the outage.”

Ashbey said social media is a good way of circulating information in times of emergency.
