“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” was not only the theme for Boyle’s high school graduation, but a good summary of the 18 graduates’ scholastic careers.

The graduation ceremony began Saturday afternoon with each graduating student walking down the main aisle with family and friends cheering and giving out high fives along the way.

They then listened to some words of congratulations and advice from Athabasca-Sturgeon-Redwater MLA Colin Piquette, Athabasca County Reeve Doris Splane, and Mayor Bob Clark.

“We salute you for your hard work over the past years and now you can look upon your future,” said Piquette. “With your family and friends, you can feel an overwhelming sense of pride, achievement and excitement of the new day.”

“On the journey of your life, it’s easy to get caught up in the scenery all around us and lose sight on the very purpose of our journey,” said Splane. “When you get to the end of your journey, your destination — your life — will be fulfilled.”

After the guest speakers, principal Art Shea handed out certificates to each of the 18 students. The students won’t receive their actual diploma until each student has officially completed all of their courses prior to the last semester.

Shea began to get a bit teary when describing some of the individuals’ character and special qualities that they brought to their school community.

“This is perhaps one of my favourite classes that I have ever taught,” said Shea. “I don’t get choked up too often, but this class means a lot to me.”

When the students each received their certificates on stage, valedictorian Trent Rosa delivered his speech to his classmates.

“My fellow graduates, we have proved to our school our courage, emotion and companionship is prominent to go out into the new world,” said Rosa. “Some of us will go to university or college, others will train as an apprentice. Regardless of the path, take a moment today to respect the bonds you have made with one another.”

Followed by many cheers and applause, the 18 Boyle students threw their academic caps into the air, knowing that they had finally reached their long awaited milestone on their journey.
