Boyle RCMP are warning people to slow down on Highway 63 after catching a male speeding down the highway travelling 68 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit June 1.
Boyle RCMP issued a court summons for a 25-year old male driver from Parkland County for speeding after officers obtained a radar reading of 168 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone, according to an RCMP press release the same day. Boyle RCMP who were patrolling Highway 63 south of Boyle saw the motorist around 12:30 a.m. June 1 and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, the press release said.
RCMP Cst. Andrew Deme said the improved road conditions in the summer months makes people bolder about speeding.
"Unfortunately, it's an often too common occruence. I would say a couple times a week we're coming into contact with motorists that are travelling 50 kilometres above the posted speed limit," Deme said in an interview.
Highway 63 gets busier during the summer months with people travelling to lakes and cottages in the area, Deme said in an interview.
Despite clearer road conditions, Deme said RCMP deal with collisions year-round and speeding makes a significant impact on reaction times.
"We want to remind people speed limits are posted for a reason and we want people to follow them to prevent collisions or tragedies," Deme said. "If they're travelling above the posted speed limit, the reaction time for say an animal, another vehicle, an obstruction in the roadway is less."
The male arrested is scheduled to appear in provincial court July 24 in Boyle, according to the June 1 RCMP press release.
Deme said RCMP want people to get to their destination safely.
"We want people to enjoy the summer up here. We know there's lots of lakes and cottages and stuff, but we want to make sure people get to where they need to be safely," he said.
