Athabasca RCMP ticketed a driver for an unsafe turn after a collision wrecked a vehicle at the Highway 55 and 34 Street intersection June 15.

A blue Honda Civic was travelling eastbound and had pulled over to the right out of the path of a fire truck, according to Athabasca RCMP Cpl. Dale Bereza. As the Honda Civic continued up the hill, a red GMC truck in the westbound lane turned left into its path, resulting in the collision. The collision occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. and was cleared by 3:30 p.m., Bereza said.

The congestion of the intersection contributed to the collision, Bereza said, adding people should take their time there.

"It can be an intersection that can run into problems at times but I think if everybody just takes their times and does what they're supposed to do there, everything can be fine. But the extra congestion definitely didn't help," Bereza said.

The driver of the Honda Civic received minor injuries, Bereza said, but was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

The Athabasca Fire Department and Athabasca RCMP controlled the intersection and utilized a westbound lane for eastbound traffic while working on scene, resulting in slowdowns for traffic in the area.

Bereza said the driver of the truck received a violation ticket under the Traffic Safety Act for an unsafe left hand turn.
