Colinton Beware

Last year, the hamlet of Colinton was struck by a spate of vandalism, including vehicles being broken into, items taken from them along with items taken from yards and out buildings.

If this was not bad enough, the post office was vandalized on at least three occasions.

Then, into the fall, this vandalism went away and our peaceful hamlet was once more safe.

But recently, the outbreak of vandalism has reared its ugly head once more.

From speaking to people in the hamlet, it is my understanding that the Colinton Community Centre has had windows smashed and vehicles are once more being broken into and items are missing from yards and outbuildings.

But this time the culprit has added a new twist to all of this – arson.

Over the past weekend (Apr. 25 and 26), a person or persons set fire to the ‘event sign’ in front of St. Andrew’s Zion Church in Colinton, destroying the slide-in sign and scorching the main sign structure not more than 15 feet from a very large spruce tree.

Oh sure, it can be repaired – about eight hours setting up and repainting new signs plus two to three hours to clean up the sign structure itself.

But who does damage to church property?

Maybe we as ratepayers within the hamlet will never know, but much conjecture about the possible vandal runs rife within the community.

Maybe they will get caught and maybe not, but one thing is certain, when and if they reach the pearly gates of heaven they will have to answer to St. Peter for their actions.
