Residents of Colinton have been received water from the Aspen Regional Water System for almost X years. Now, they have to pay for it.

Athabasca County council increased Colinton’s water rates at their meeting last Thursday. It’s the first time the hamlet’s water rates have been amended since 2005.

The new rate is $33 per month for up to15 cubic metres of water, up from the old rate of $27.81, which represents an 18.7-per-cent increase.

Water used in excess of 15 cubic metres now costs $2.20 per cube, up from $1.85, an increase of 18.9 per cent.

“The changes will commence June 1, 2011, giving the county 60 days’ notice,” said county manager Gary Buchanan.

County director of infrastructure services Brian Adamkewicz said the new rates reflect the actual cost of water to the county, as set by the Aspen Regional Water System.

“This rate is actually what we’re paying to the commission now,” he said.

As Colinton is the only county hamlet currently connected to the regional water system, the new rates apply only to Colinton residents.

Adamkewicz said the same rate may be applied as the regional system is extended to Grassland and Wandering River, but that would be a decision of county council.
