Crime mapping ready to roll

Athabasca RCMP are readying a new crime mapping project which will give citizens an overview on crime in their community and is expected to roll out across the province.

Athabasca RCMP are readying a new crime mapping project which will give citizens an overview on crime in their community and is expected to roll out across the province.

Town of Athabasca Council voted unanimously to approve a motion for the project to go up on its municipal website June 19. The crime map, which has been piloted in St. Albert since January, showcases  types of crimes and where they are happening within a community.

Athabasca RCMP staff Sgt. Brian Nicholl said in a letter to town council the project would highlight crimes including theft of motor vehicles, breaking and entering, mischief and missing persons.

"Initatives such as this one go a long way in creating safe and resilient communities for all Albertans," Nicholl said in the letter.

He added in the letter the technology has been working in St. Albert and is now ready to roll out across the province.

In an email, Nicholl said he expects the project to be implemented in Athabasca within a month.
