Edwin Parr Composite’s For Sale Theatre is preparing another stage production that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
The students (led by director and drama teacher Bruce MacDonald) are in final rehearsals for ‘The Love For Three Oranges’, a classic story of comedy that has been adapted countless times throughout the world. In fact, it’s most widely known as an opera.
In the play, the young prince of a kingdom is sick, and can only be cured by laughter. Unfortunately, it is a vengeful witch that inadvertently causes him to laugh, and in response she curses him to be obsessed with three oranges.
The students have been working hard on the play since returning to school in September.
“The style is somewhat improvised. It’s very unlike anything you’ve ever seen,” said MacDonald, noting that there is a fair bit of audience interaction. “The stage manager and her assistants work to bridge the gap between reality and the play.”
It’s also a very lighthearted play. Where some other EPC productions have been a little more serious and mature, this one is all about fun and laughter.
“I was reading it with some of the students, and this one fits them really well. It’s very silly,” said MacDonald. “This one is pretty family friendly. The story is ridiculous. It should be a real fun evening.”
The production will run for three nights, Nov. 24 - 26, at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are $12 and will be available at the door, and in advance at Value Drug Mart in Athabasca.
