Edwin Parr Composite School Grade 12 student Emily Marsden won an honourable mention for acting, and EPC’s play The Scarlet Heart won for best costumes during the provincial one-act play competition for high schools May 8–10 in Red Deer.

“I won an honourable mention for acting in my role in Barefoot in Nightgown by Candlelight,” Marsden said. “It was surreal.”

Marsden stated the competition was tough.

“There were so many other talented kids, and being at provincials is a reward in itself. I think most of the other kids there feel that way, and that gives it a really friendly atmosphere,” she said. “I was honoured that the adjudicator even knew my name.”

Marsden said she did learn a thing or two.

“The adjudicators there are very perceptive and sometimes point out things I would never have thought of,” she said. “I would love, love, love to do it again, but sadly it is my last year. So, I wish all the best to my successors.”

She said the event was eye-opening.

“Provincials is always an experience that gives me a glimpse into just how big the world of theatre really is and how much talent is out there,” she said.

Marsden performed in both plays EPC took to provincials: Barefoot in Nightgown by Candlelight and The Scarlet Heart.

“This was our second time performing them, so I wasn’t as nervous, even though there was a lot more people and the stage was a lot bigger than at zones,” she said.

Marsden has performed at provincials before; she said that helped.

“I felt like I was in the company of other people who love theatre just as much as I do,” she said.
