A man died as the result of a vehicle fire east of Athabasca Dec. 9.

Bruce Chester Howse, 43, lost his life when his vehicle went off the road on Hwy 55.

Athabasca RCMP and Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle engulfed in flames, approximately 2.5 kilometres east of Highway 827. They arrived on the scene at 12:10 a.m.

Howse’s truck was found on the south side of the highway with its tires dug deeply into the ditch. Police are not sure how long the vehicle was in the ditch before igniting.

An investigation is currently underway to determine what caused Howse’s truck to go off the road.

Police cannot say for certain, but believe it is a ‘fair assumption’ that alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

Howse’s identity was discovered in collaboration between the Edmonton Medical Examiners Office and the RCMP.
