Due to continuing dry weather, a total fire ban remains in effect right across the Athabasca region.

The order in the Town of Athabasca  was first issued by fire chief Travis Shalapay May 24. According to the order, any outdoor fires, including for camping, are prohibited. As well, no new fire permits will be issued, and all current ones are now suspended. As well, all fireworks are suspended.

A similar order was issued by Athabasca County May 23, which prohibits all open fires within the county's limits. That includes recreational fire pits, burn barrels, fireworks and exploding targets and charcoal barbecues.

As well, all existing fire permits continue to be suspended, and no new permits will be issued. County officials said that anyone caught violating a fire ban could face a fine.

In both jurisdictions, all gas or propane fired appliances for cooking and warming purposes are permitted, including barbecues and camp stoves.

A fire ban also remains in effect for the Lac La Biche wildfire management area, where danger levels remain between Very High to Extreme.
