The Heartwood Folk Club has announced its spring lineup will feature fresh folk groups that have never performed with the club previously.

“We’ve got a spring season, four shows, and prices will be the same as last season,” said Heartwood organizer Peter Opryshko.

Tickets will be $22 in advance or $25 at the door for adults. Children under 12 will be free; youth aged 12–18 and seniors 65 and up will be $19 in advance or $22 at the door.

Season passes, which cover four shows, will be $85 for adults and $75 for youth and seniors.

Kicking off the season Feb. 2, Dry Bones from Winnipeg will perform. The self-described “power folk trio” eschews fiddles and drums in favour of harmonicas and kazoos (combined with the more typical banjo, guitar and stand-up bass) for their distinctive sound.

On Feb. 12, geologist-turned-songstress Katherine Wheatley will perform with Wendell Ferguson. A few weeks later, on March 19, Irish five-piece band Caladh Nue will perform.

On March 29, Stephen Fearing and Andy White — previously solo artists who have decided to combine their roots sounds — will perform. White is Northern Ireland-born and has worked with heavy hitters like Sinead O’Connor and Van Morrison. Fearing, of Canadian rock/roots darlings Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, is a double Juno winner.

“These are all brand new, never been (to Heartwood). Often we’ve had performers have that have been. This time, it’s four brand-new acts,” said Opryshko, excited for the change.
