Hees Estates paving

The potential paving of 47 Street to Hees Estates has been met with some criticism.

Commentators on a local Facebook forum have been vocal about the need (or lack thereof) for such paving after it was reported that the estimate for the project came in $55,000 over budget.

In last yearís budget, council allocated $2.8 million for the project. At a council meeting last month, Associated Engineering stated the estimate for the project would be a total of $2,855,000.

Councillor Colleen Powell recently stated that the road was scheduled to be paved last year because council had the money to do so. She also stated that over the years the amount of traffic that travels that road has increased significantly, and something needs to be done to fix the condition of the road so it doesnít erode each spring.

As to whether or not the road will be paved in 2013, Powell said that will be up to this yearís budget, and councilís decision.

Council did not see eye to eye on the project when it was discussed last year. Councillors Paula Evans, Lionel Cherniwchan and Mayor Roger Morrill all voted against the motion last year.

ìUpgrading and paving of the Colinton Highway could cost more than $3 million,î Morrill said at the time. ìAlthough this would be nice, I can only consider supporting the initial street component without sidewalk for an estimated cost of under $800,000, and that it would be done as local improvement.î
