All the typical superhero tropes electrified the Nancy Appleby Theatre Sept. 30.

Accidental Humour Co. returned to Athabasca for a second time for the production of The Spark: A Hero Takes Charge, produced by Theatre Athabasca.

Accidental Humour Co. were in town last January with their production of Cowboy: A Cowboy Story, and the theatre company again utilized their multimedia drama trademark for their latest superhero production.

In the 70 minute show, orphaned electrical engineer Maddy Martin found herself with static electricity powers after a work accident, leaving her alone able to fight off the villains of Metro City.

Frazer Andrews of Theatre Athabasca said Cowboy: A Cowboy Story was really well received so it was well worth bringing back the theatre company.

“We think they do really innovative stuff,” he said. “The other side of it, as Theatre Athabasca we are trying to build a theatre going audience here. For us the more theatre there is in town is for the better.”

Jayce McKenzie played Martin in The Spark and said the intent of the production was to poke fun of how comic books and movies usually go.

“I think it was so great for them to have a female hero and a female villain. It doesn’t happen.”

Gina Payzant said she thought the production was “very fresh” and modern.

“Here we are in Athabasca, a relatively small community, and we can get something that is, I think, it’s high level,” she said.

“It seemed like it lasted 15 minutes because it was just so much fun.”
