All traffic traveling on Highway 55 through Athabasca will be detoured on to 43 Street, while an Alberta Transportation intersection project progresses.

The detour was set to commence on May 21, and is scheduled to last for six weeks.

The underpass access to Highway 813 will be closed off as of May 21, and they will also be directed onto 43 Street.

“Signs will be erected to direct traffic to the detour route, ” spokesperson Melinda Steenbergen said. “Eastbound traffic heading north onto Highway 813 will continue on Highway 55 to 43rd Street and make a left turn north. ”

Once the new intersection is complete, the detour will be removed.

“Presently the contractor is reconstructing the tapers at 43rd Street and Highway 55 to improve capacity for larger vehicles, ” she explained.

This project has been ongoing for two years, and will be completed by October.

“This is a big project, exciting stuff for Athabasca and the area as capacity and safety improvements are made, ” she explained.

“I hope local traffic will find the detour routes easy to use on Tuesday and people will understand the ‘pain before gain ’ reality of construction season. ”
