The audience at the Rotary Fieldhouse was attentive and respectful during a memorial ceremony for the late Jim Woodward held at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex last Saturday.

Woodward, a former county manager and well-respected Athabasca Rotarian, was remembered by more than 450 people who turned out for the public ceremony, including county councillors and representatives of the Athabasca RCMP.

After introductions from Reverend Peter Grundler, eulogies were delivered by Ron Woodward, Jim Woodwardís brother; followed by Jeanna Friedley, Jimís daughter; and Ron Jackson, Agriculture and Protective Services Director at Athabasca County.

Jackson began by noting he ìhad the distinct privilege of working for and with Jim Woodward for 21 years,î describing Woodward as ìa remarkable man who had a significant impact on my life and my career.î

ìJim came into the office every day with a smile on his face, and a genuine friendly greeting for everyone. He cared about us, our families and our work conditions,î said Jackson.

ìWhat I found even more remarkable was how he found the time and the energy to commit so much of himself to the benefit of so many.

ìJim was a mentor, a leader and a friend,î he concluded.

Vocalist Naomi Schmold sang a heartfelt rendition of Sarah McLachlanís 1997 hit, Angel, with piano accompaniment by her mother, Linda Schmold.

ìAs I reflect on his amazing life, Iím impressed that he didnít do things to feed his ego, but rather to make those around him enjoy life more,î reflected Ron Woodward.

ìHe didnít make excuses about getting involved, he just did what he knew was right, and always with class. Iím proud to be his brother.î

Friedley took the podium, which was decorated with numerous floral arrangements surrounding a central photograph of her father.

Jimís daughter spoke of her fatherís strength of character and expressed her appreciation to members of the community for recognizing her late father and his contribution to the community.

ìFriends and family were so important to my dad, and this community was so important to him. Athabasca was his home, and this is where his heart will always be,î said Friedley.

ìI feel so fortunate to have known my father for over 30 years and so blessed for every year he had to spend with my children,î said Friedley.

ìRest well, my brother,î said Woodward.
