Lois Demcoe, a member of the Athabasca Community Handbell Choir, performs last Christmas. The community choir will play with the JUBILOSO! Bells of Concordia group this Saturday at Edwin Parr Composite.

JUBILOSO! Bells of Concordia will be performing at Edwin Parr Composite School April 26 at 7 p.m.

“They are an amazing choir that started in 2002,” said Monica Rosborough, student minster at the Athabasca United Church, which helped sponsor the group. “They are 16 very accomplished musicians who have played bells with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra, Pro Coro Canada, Da Camera Singers, Sine Nomine and other groups.”

Tickets will be sold at the door for $15 per adult or $12 for seniors and students. Family tickets are $25, and kids under five are free.

The group performs outside of Edmonton for a different community every year.

“They don’t play just handbells, but a variety of instruments as part of their concerts,” Rosborough said. “Some of the amazing bells they have are chimes, which sound very similar to a doorbell, but they have five octaves.”

The lower-sounding chimes are more than five feet tall.

“Some members have also played in Australia and participated in a handbell tour in Israel,” Rosborough said. “They play a six-and-a-half octave set of handbells, and that with the chimes makes them one of the largest handbell choirs I have ever seen.”

The Athabasca Community Handbell Choir, which includes Rosborough, will be playing on some of the songs.

“That will be quite the honour to play with such experienced musicians,” she exclaimed.
