Long-awaited paving project on Highway 827 finally approved

The Alberta government is moving ahead with plans to complete the paving of Highway 827, north of Highway 661, after several years of the public pushing for the project.

“People have been trying to get this done for years,” said Athabasca-Redwater MLA Jeff Johnson. “This is an important project that has been a priority for the community. I’m pleased to see this project moving forward.”

The section to be paved runs approximately 16 km in length, and as Athabasca County Reeve David Yurdiga explained, “Paving the final section of (Highway) 827 is tremendous news for Athabasca and Thorhild County. This vital link will improve traffic flows; benefiting residents and agriculture producers in our municipality.”

County of Thorhild Reeve Charlie Newell also expressed his satisfaction with the recent decision to pave the section of the highway which lies approximately 15 km north of the hamlet of Thorhild, saying, “This has been on the county wish list for a while.”

The paving of this final segment will ultimately complete the north/south highway, making the journey along Highway 827 more efficient for travelers and business alike, venturing north from Thorhild, Redwater and the busy industrial area of Fort Saskatchewan.

An estimated completion date is yet to be determined, as the project remains at this time in its tendering stage. Construction and costs will be available once a contractor has been established.
