Driver of stolen truck arrested at gunpoint after crashing into RCMP truck, nearly running down an officer

Police arrested a man at gunpoint after he crashed into an RCMP vehicle and nearly ran down an officer with a stolen truck at the Husky gas station in Athabasca. ;

On Oct. 23 around 2:30 p.m., Athabasca RCMP arrived at the gas station - located at the corner of Highways 2 and 55 - after receiving a report of a vehicle was there that had been stolen from Leduc the day before. ;

In an interview, Cpl. Steve Bereza said two officers approached the stolen truck on foot. The driver panicked, reversed and rammed an RCMP cruiser behind him. Bereza said he then drove forward, and an officer with his gun drawn had to jump out of the way. ;

Bereza said a 22-year-old suspect from Edmonton was taken into police custody. He added that the name of the suspect could not be released, as the charges had not been laid as of the Advocate ’s publication deadline.
