Moonlight Madness made its triumphant return to Athabasca last Friday, once again encouraging area residents to stay local for their holiday gift-buying.

Athabasca residents and even those from the surrounding area flocked into town for all of the deals at local retailers.

The evening was kicked off at 6:30 p.m. with a parade full of colourful Christmas floats and an appearance from the man himself, Santa Claus, at the end.

A tremendous fireworks display followed despite the wind. Many of the shoppers took a break to watch the display of lights. A bonfire was lit by the riverfront, and many kids enjoyed playing in its warm glow.

After the fireworks, spectators resumed their shopping, which saw most downtown merchants packed all night. Servus Credit Union featured pictures with Santa, and the line to meet Saint Nick stretched outside the door.

Despite the bitter cold, the annual event was a success once again, with locals doing their holiday shopping at home and enjoying a memorable night in their community.
