A 24-year old Morinville-area man has been charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death, for operating a side-by-side that rolled and killed a 27-year old man.
The names of the accused and the deceased were not released. It is not known where the deceased man was from.
At around 7:30 p.m., Athabasca RCMP were called to an off-highway vehicle roll over on Range Road 235, near the intersection of Township Road 682, about 5 km northeast of Island Lake provincial campground.
RCMP arrived at the scene and found a side-by-side carrying two occupants had rolled along over.the highway. The passenger was declared deceased at the scene and the driver was charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
The men were camping near Island Lake Provincial Park at the time.
Alcohol was believed to be a factor, but officials are still investigating whether speed played any role.
“At this point, our investigation is continuing, ” said Athabasca RCMP Cpl. Joanna Patry. “I couldn't specifically comment on that, but the charge of dangerous driving was laid based on the evidence we have so far. ”
The accused will appear in Athabasca Provincial Court on August 10.
