Self-taught artist Judy Gauthier has painted a Buy-Low Foods mural in the entrance to the store.

The mural is a blast from the past for some of Athabasca’s residents. It depicts the original mural Gauthier painted in the old Buy-Low Foods store, which was painted in the 1990s. The new store was built approximately three years ago.

“All the customers wanted us to save it, but because it was on drywall, we couldn’t,” Gauthier said. “A lot of customers emailed head office and said they would like to see the same thing painted in the new store.”

Gauthier has added to the size of the mural by adding a few extra scenes. One depicts a customer purchasing goods at a counter, while others are of lanterns and ceramic jugs.

However, she is not finished. On either end of the entrance where the grocery carts are located, she is going to paint a scene of the old store and one of the current store.
