A man and his wife are lucky to be alive after a near head-on collision sent their black 2002 Chevy Trailblazer off of Highway 2 southbound at approximately 6:15 p.m. Wednesday night, crashing into the west tree line. The couple escaped unscathed.

Tim Knopp, 30, and his wife were visiting family in Athabasca and travelling home to Edmonton, on their way back home to Edmonton their SUV lost control about 4 km south of Athabasca.
"I was in the right lane, and my back end flopped out, and we went skidding into the [oncoming] lane, and there was an oncoming vehicle, said Knopp.

Knopp said the oncoming traffic was "not close, but I was anxious to get back into my lane and overcorrected," describing the -15 şC road conditions as "slick" at the time.
The couple notified Knopp's sister-in-law whose vehicle they was trailing about 10 minutes behind, and she came back to assist.

Steve's Towing arrived soon after and suggested that due to the dark conditions that, once the vehicle is emptied of Christmas paraphernalia, that they secure the vehicle and return to remove it in the morning, to which Knopp agreed.
"It's just bad, poor winter conditions," Knopp said looking down the embankment at his vehicle protruding from the woods.
