Brad Gilbert has been hired as the new manager of the Athabasca Regional Multiplex.

Originally from a town near Peterborough, Ontario, Gilbert has been working in the recreation field all his life.

He recently relocated from Regina where he was a supervisor for one of the city’s leisure centres.

Prior to that, Gilbert was the manager of Leisure Services for the City of Estevan.

He also spent time in the County of Grande Prairie as its manager of recreation.

As for coming to Athabasca, he is thrilled to be reminded of home.

“I grew up in the Kawartha Lakes area, about 20 minutes outside of Peterborough. Rolling hills, forest, and lakes -– it reminded me of home,” he said. “It feels homey.”

The Athabasca Regional Multiplex attracted Gilbert because of the potential expansion.

“I was looking at the opportunity and the potential over the next few years,” he said.

“I recognize bringing in a new aquatics centre, expanding the fitness centre combined with the public library and school, and all the nice synergies that can be created from that. It is a great opportunity.”

Gilbert said it was too good to pass up.

“It just sounds like a career defining opportunity,” he said.

“When I submitted my two-weeks notice, my boss said he couldn’t blame me, and he would do the same thing.”

Gilbert is excited to expand the fitness centre, as he works out on a regular basis.

“I can’t wait to work with the school and make a facility that can work for both parties,” he said.

Gilbert moved here with his dog Hunter and looks forward to hearing the public’s feedback on the multiplex.

“I am open to ideas. I know people have opinions, fire them at me,” he said.
