Nomination business

The flowers are blooming, children are bursting out of school and it is time to nominate the best businesses in Athabasca.

The flowers are blooming, children are bursting out of school and it is time to nominate the best businesses in Athabasca.

The Athabasca and District Chambers of Commerce is asking for community nominations for their fourth annual business awards before the July 15 deadline, and the award-winning businesses will be announced during the gala in October.

Noel Major, Athabasca and District Chamber of Commerce director, said last year was a record-breaking number of nominations and the hope is to at least match that.

“The Chamber is plugging along, this will be our fourth year. It’s been going well so hopefully we can continue it. We’ve got good support in the community,” he said.

Anyone can nominate businesses under the nine categories: employer of youth award, green business of the year, lifetime achievement award, community spirit award, new business of the year, manager of the year, business of the year, marketer of the year and young entrepreneur award.

Chamber president Laurie Bonell said last year Bubel’s won the best business of the year award. She said it was nice to see a business that has been around since she was young be recognized.

“They won an award and knowing the people, knowing how many years they’ve been in business and seeing the recognition the community gave them was so nice,” she said. “Having received any award gives you that good feeling that ‘yes I’ve done well in my community’.”

Major said the benefit of the business awards is creating awareness and celebrating good business.

“Just awareness of what we do in the community, what the businesses do for the community, what we have here,” he said.

Anyone who wishes to make a nomination can do so before July 15 at the website athabascachamber.org.
