Canadian Olympic gold-medallist curler Brad Jacobs had his Olympic ring stolen from his Boyle motel room while staying in the village to participate in a charity golf tournament last weekend.
Jacobs was in the village over the weekend of June 21 playing in the Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic, which raises money to combat cancer. The theft occurred overnight on June 20, and along with the ring, other personal effects were stolen, including his wallet, which has since been found by the RCMP.
“This is a rare occurrence in Boyle,” said village Mayor Don Radmanovich in an RCMP press release. “We happen to have a very strong police presence in the Village of Boyle, and crimes like this just generally don’t happen.”
“While we continue to investigate the theft, our hope is that the ring be reunited with Mr. Jacobs. We are seeking the public’s assistance in its recovery,” said Constable Alex Ayres with the Boyle RCMP.
The room of CTV Edmonton journalists Brenna Rose and Veronica Jubinville was also broken into, and several items, including Jubinville’s wallet, were also stolen.
“I’m just really, really disappointed that someone would go that low. It’s just an embarrassment for our community,” said Terry Mudryk-Habarenko, organizer for the golf tournament.
“I think the entire community is disappointed,” she said.
RCMP are urging anyone with further information to contact Boyle RCMP at 780-689-3622 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
