Patricia Pedersen has been elected trustee for the Aspen View Southwest ward, which comprises Rochester and Thorhild schools.

Pedersen received 366 votes in the election that ended Monday evening; runner-up Robert Hooey received 207 votes.

Pedersen said one of the greatest challenges facing the division is to answer the question, "What do we do about the students who fall through cracks?"

She would like to see more mentorship in schools, though she recognizes the good work already done by family counsellors in both schools in her ward.

Pedersen has experience as a private tutor, 4-H leader and homeschooler, and she has been the coordinator for the Athabasca and Area Early Childhood Development Community Coalition.

She said she will spend one afternoon per week in Rochester School and Thorhild Central School so that community members can drop in and speak with her face to face.

Aspen View Southcentral, the only other ward in which there was an election, saw Elohne Chizawsky take a commanding lead with 657 votes, ousting incumbent Randy Uglanica, who received 361 votes.

All other Aspen View trustees were acclaimed last month.
