Drivers will think twice about speeding in Hees Estates and High School Hill after this week.

Two speed trailers were posted at various locations throughout those neighbourhoods on Sept. 22 to remind drivers that the speed limit has been reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.

The speed trailers were a joint effort between the Athabasca RCMP and the Town of Athabasca to inform the public about the new rules.

“Before you hand out tickets, it’s important to let people know that there has been a change,” responded Athabasca RCMP Cpl. Joanna Patry.

The trailers were borrowed from the Boyle Traffic Unit and will be heading out to other locations in eastern Alberta after this week.

At that time, the Town Of Athabasca peace officer Shaun Woloschuk will amp up enforcement.

Fines will range from $57 to upwards of $351 for speeds exceeding 50 kilometres over the posted limit.

Town council approved the new signage to slow down drivers back in July as part of a two-year pilot project.

The town is planning to re-evaluate the limit after that time, based on majority support from residents.

“We’ll look at the feedback we get from this and if looks like it’d be good to deploy it again. That’s something we would look at in the future,” Patry said.
