Organizers of the second annual Relay for Life cancer fundraiser are putting the call out to the community for any and all volunteers interested in getting involved with the event.

Leyann Joyes, currently the chair of the organizing committee, said that there are positions for people of all talents.

“Last year we had between 9 and 12 regular volunteers, but the more the better,” she said.

The committee hosted their first meeting since the first ever running of the 24-hour event in Athabasca last June, which netted over $71,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event welcomed 22 teams while paying tribute to the 60 cancer survivors on hand.

“The first year is always a learning experience but I was very happy with the total outcome,” she said.

She said she would like to see next year’s event surpass last year’s showing, but that will only be possible with the help of dedicated volunteers, adding that there are a variety of available positions requiring different skills, such as sales, catering and promoting the event.

“We have a spot for everybody,” she said.

This year’s event, tentatively set for June 15, will again be held at the Multiplex.

“It served as such a good venue last year that we’d like to keep it there,” she said.

The committee’s next meeting will be held at the Multiplex lounge at 5 p.m. on Jan. 11.

“We’ll be talking about what was good and what needs to change,” she said, adding that they welcome new ideas.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Joyes at 780-675-5438 or via email at [email protected].

Those interested in taking part in the relay can take advantage of an early bird registration special that runs until the end of January. The regular registration fee of $15 will be $5 cheaper until then, and can be done at relayforlife.ca
