River’s Edge Campground closed last week on June 23, at 6:00 a.m. because Alberta Transportation bought the property.

Come Canada Day, the campground will be open for all your camping needs, but this will be the last time the riverfront area will be used as a campsite.

“The property has been purchased by Transportation for the new interchange and the realigning of the Tawatina River,” CAO Doug Topinka said. “They expect to be starting construction in mid July.”

The Town of Athabasca is also doing utility relocation due to the interchange.

“Our contractors started the beginning of last week, and we were not sure whether he was going to start on the campground side, or the south side of 55,” Topinka said. “It turns out he started on the south side, so actually we’re going to open the campground again for the long weekend so that there will be camping available for the River Rats.”

The plan with River’s Edge Campground was to have it open as long as possible before the construction started.

After the River Rats festival the campground will be closed for good when the construction starts.
