A man charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 1 death of his cousin near Rochester will stand trial in a St. Albert courtroom.

Lawyer Kent Teskey represented Parminder Sakhon, 25, in Athabasca Provincial Court March 14, where Judge Clifton Purvis set dates for a pre-trial hearing, April 15 in Edmonton, and preliminary inquiry, Nov. 21-25, in St. Albert. Sakhon, who's currently free on bail, faces charges of second-degree murder, pointing a firearm and discharging a firearm in relation to the death of Pardeep Sihu, his 19-year-old cousin.

According to an RCMP press release, around 10:20 p.m. on Jan. 1, RCMP responded to gunfire five kilometres north of Rochester. When they arrived, they found the remains of an adult man.

On Jan. 3, the Edmonton Major Crime Unit and the Edmonton Forensic Identification Section, in conjunction with the Athabasca RCMP, concluded their investigation and charged Sakhon.

Teskey was standing in for the defendant's retained lawyer, Dane Bullerwell.
