Athabasca RCMP investigating and seeking public assistance after a shot was heard in a physical altercation in front of the Grand Union Hotel June 22.

Witness information states a lone male approached a group of four other men in front of the hotel at approximately 1 a.m. June 22, according to an RCMP press release the same day.

"A physical altercation broke out. The lone male was able to break free of the altercation, and someone was overheard stating 'I'm going to shoot you.' A moment later, a shot was heard," the press release said.

The lone male suspect drove away from the scene in a dark coloured SUV in an unknown direction, the press release said. The group of four males drove away in a green GMC half tonne pickup truck and left the area, turning north on Highway 813.

It is not known if anyone was injured as no victims have come forward, the press release said.

Athabasca RCMP Cpl. Dale Bereza said the lone male is suspected of possibly doing a shooting. The lone male suspect is described as being heavy set and was wearing glasses, a red shirt and dark clothing.

Bereza also said RCMP do not doubt the sound heard at the scene was gunfire.

"There's no doubt we believe it was a gun blast from reports that we have," Bereza said in an interview.

Athabasca RCMP ask anyone with information about this incident to call its detachment at 780-675-5122. Those who wish to remain anonymous can also call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
