ATHABASCA — Athabasca County councillors will hear from three different delegations, have an opportunity to discuss two proposed bylaws, hear the submitted resolutions for Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) Spring 2024 convention, and more during their first meeting of March.
A presentation from Metrix Group, the county’s audit and accounting firm, will start the list of delegations in front of councillors during their March 12 meeting, with part of the presentation taking place in closed session.
Then, representatives from the Athabasca Landing Trails Steering Committee and Athabasca Recreational Trails Association will provide an update on the trails in the area and potential projects in need of attention in the future.
The third presentation is to come from Athabasca University and will also take place in closed session under section 25 (1) of the FOIP Act, which covers disclosure that may impact the economic interests of a public body.
Following the delegations, councillors will have a chance to review and discuss a Flashing Green Light Bylaw, and an amending bylaw for Fees and Planning Development. The former, which allows first responders to use green flashing lights as a warning and safety measure, is up for both second and third readings, while the latter is eligible for all three.
Councillors will have the option of discussing resolutions submitted by other RMA member municipalities that will be spoken to at the upcoming convention in Edmonton, scheduled for March 18 to 20.
Items already included for consideration include the decline of fire services in rural Alberta, continued support for Regional Economic Development Alliances, and funding to fill the gap left by lost oil and gas revenue.
The meeting will begin in the County Administrative Building at 9:30 a.m. The agenda for the meeting can be found here, and meetings are livestreamed on the county’s YouTube page.
