If you want some input into what the new Athabasca high school, you best be quick about it.

The Aspen View Public Schools (AVPS) division is looking to students, parents, the community and staff members for suggests on what the new school should look like and include.

AVPS secretary-treasurer Rodney Boyko explained the survey has a short shelf life.

“If we do keep holding off with the survey, that will hold back everything. This is a quick turnaround with the deadline on Feb. 22,” he stated.

“That allows us to start working on it on Monday, Feb 23.”

The survey was actually released on the division’s social media pages and website last Tuesday, giving the public just 12 days to fill it out.

The survey is online and is not multiple choice, but is separated into three parts with several questions in each section.

Each question includes a box for people to include their comments.

“Essentially, the survey is a long answer questionnaire,” Boyko said.

“We want to see what kind of elements that people see in a new school. We don’t want this to be a new template type, cookie-cutter school. We want it to be a school that is build for the students with the students in mind.”

Boyko explained the survey is open ended to promote creative ideas.

“We want to be able to take in everyone’s suggestions, and we left it open-ended on purpose to allow for that,” he said.

“We need to find out what the students would see in a new school, what the parents would see in a new school, to make the facility that meets their needs instead of just the construction needs.

“We are trying to make this a school that meets the student’s needs first.”

The results from the survey will help guide the design of the new school.
