Japanese exchange student Yuki Miyakoshi is part of the Grade 9 and 10 Biz Kids program that Community Futures – Tawatinaw Region is hosting in Athabasca this spring.

The program helps young entrepreneurs get started.

Miyakoshi has organized a Taste of Japan event where people can attend Edwin Parr Composite School’s home economics room on June 20 at 5 p.m. to taste some traditional Japanese dishes for $2.

Miyakoshi explained she wanted to participate in the program because she wanted to start her own business.

“I want to make some money,” she said.

She said she came to Canada to study English and wants to thank her friends, teachers and residents of the community for helping her during her 10-month stay here.

“I am not going to make a Japanese dessert this time because they are too difficult. Instead, I will make cookies, brownies, muffins, cheesecake,” she said. “I want people to come, not just EPC students. I want the town to come.”

Miyakoshi will surprise attendees with several Japanese dishes. She wants to share her knowledge of Japanese culture and food and wants to spark an interest in everything Japanese.

“I want to own a party company for teenagers,” she said of her future entrepreneurial goals.
