ATHABASCA — Live music is returning to the Nancy Appleby Theatre this fall.

Since 1997 Athabasca's Heartwood Folk Club has been a reliable source of live music, presenting a series of musical acts each year, and on Oct. 7, the live music series returns with musician Tim Hus, who was scheduled to finish off the 2020 spring season before COVID-19 put an early end to that.

“We’re not even sure how many seasons we’ve got,” said Marlin Johnson, one of the founding members of the folk club. “Do you count the pandemic years?”

If you count the pandemic years, because it wasn’t by choice, it’s 25 but if you don’t then Heartwood is at 23 years and going strong with four performances scheduled for the fall music season including past favourites and new performers.

“(Tim Hus) was booked for the spring we got shut down,” Johnson said. “Then the McDade’s have been here before too. Scott Cook will be a new performer and Phyllis Sinclair was here many, many years ago.”

There will be shows in October, November, and December and to save money people are encouraged to buy seasons tickets for $99 for adults, and $90 for seniors and youth.

“It’s $30 each show if you buy them as advance tickets; that’s $120,” he said, “And if you buy them at the door for $35, that’s $140 so it’s a real savings to buy the season pass.”

The tickets are transferable if you can’t go and children 12 and under are always free.

“We have intentionally tried to start that with a supporting-local-kind-of-thing and in this case here local means the province,” Johnson said of the choices in fall performers.

The club is also looking to partner with a local non-profit to run a concession during intermissions. The non-profit would provide snacks and beverages, run the concession, and keep any profit.

Tickets and season passes are available at Value Drug Mart and Whispering Hills Fuels in Athabasca or by calling Harvey at 780-675-4158 or George at 780-698-3957.
