The new school is moving forward after town council approved paying for the servicing of the site.
“It’s very good news,” Aspen View Public Schools (AVPS) superintendent Mark Francis said during last Thursday’s school board meeting.
“We had requested the town pass a motion supporting the new school.”
Town council not only passed a motion, but they also wrote a letter to the division.
“I am pleased to be able to confirm that council has responded favorably to each of your requests in order to satisfy the requirement of Alberta Infrastructure and to keep this important project on track,” stated the letter, written on behalf of town council by chief administrative officer (CAO) Joshua Pyrcz.
The town will now provide up to $300,000 to service the new school site and transfer the legal interest in the lands for the building envelope.
Francis said the school division can now approach Alberta Education to finalize the project.
“The last outstanding item for us to proceed is that we must have title to the land and we must have access to title of land, he said.
“The municipalities involved have to agree to pay for off-site services.”
Francis added everyone is eager to start the next steps in the project.
“We can then open those tenders, hire a bridging architect and start the important work of discussing a new school/pool location and what it could look like,” he explained.
“This is some of the best news we have received. Now we can unleash the dogs and start having those very important community consultations that the public has been waiting for.”
The new school, along with the community aspect – a new swimming pool and library – is slated for completion in fall of 2017.
