RCMP report there is an "unfolding event" happening in the North West quadrant of the city. The RCMP are asking residents to avoid the area.

ATHABASCA — RCMP said two Albertans were killed in a fatal collision between a truck and a semi at the intersection of highway 2 and highway 661 in the late morning of Feb. 1.

A 69-year-old male resident of Nampa, Alta., and a 73-year-old male resident of Donnelly, Alta., lost their lives in the collision near the hamlet of Rochester.

In a media release sent out Feb. 2, RCMP Media relations officer Matthew Howell said, "Preliminary findings suggest that a pickup truck crossed into the oncoming lane colliding head-on with a semi-truck." Both the deceased individuals were travelling in the pickup truck, and the driver of the semi did not report any injuries.

Both highways were cleared and traffic resumed at 2 p.m. Feb. 1.
