Last Saturday, family, friends and guests gathered in the Boyle School gymnasium to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2014.

The 17 graduates sat on the stage before the crowd and took in the messages of inspiration and hope given by various speakers.

Present at the ceremony were dignitaries from the Aspen View school board and school division, along with Athabasca County Reeve Doris Splane.

Splane told the graduates that even though their high school days are behind them, “The memories will last forever.

“The years ahead hold exciting potential for you,” she said.

The class’s valedictorian was Carly Sawchuk, who regaled her fellow grads with hopes for the future and funny tales from their days in class together.

Boyle School principal Art Shea explained in his principal’s address that the teachers learn about the same amount from their students as the students learn from them.

“(The) kids make a difference in my life every day,” Shea said.

“I want to thank you on behalf of the teachers for making our lives interesting,” he told the graduates.

Scholarships and awards were presented during the ceremony,

Graduate Colton Nikipelo was awarded several scholarships and awards including those from the Lions Club, the Boyle & District Agricultural Society, Rural Crime Watch, and the Calvin Tumbles Campbell Memorial Scholarship. Campbell, a former student of Boyle School, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in December 2013. He passed away in March of this year. His family has set up the scholarship in his name.

Graduate Shania Whitford was named Athlete of the Year, and Sawchuk received an arts award and the Governor General’s Academic Medal.
