Woman and child sent to hospital after single-vehicle accident

ATHABASCA – Two people, including a young child, were sent to hospital following a Jan. 3 single-vehicle accident east of Athabasca.

At 10:28 a.m. Jan. 3, the Athabasca Fire Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision 10 kilometres east of the Town of Athabasca on Airport Road (Range Road 221), north of Highway 55. A white Chevrolet truck had left the roadway striking an approach before stopping in a farmer's field.

"With our mutual-aid partners from Associated Ambulance, Athabasca RCMP and the Alberta Sheriffs we extricated the occupants, a single adult, the driver, and a toddler from the vehicle," said Athabasca fire chief Travis Shalapay. "Both were transported to to the Athabasca Healthcare Centre for further treatment."

Athabasca RCMP were on scene investigating the accident, while first responders took care of the injured driver and child. No further details were available at this time.
